For Parents

Volunteer Roles

HOOPS is a simple, low-budget, fun kids basketball league that runs on volunteer power. We need every parent’s volunteer help to have another great season. When you sign up your child(ren) for HOOPS you will be required to help out with at least one of the following (don’t worry; you’ll have fun, too!)

Coach

We always need coaches. You can do it. It’s not that hard, especially for the little kids. There are several moms and dads who coached basketball for the first time while at HOOPS and have gone on to live perfectly normal healthy lives. Help is available. We’ve got some links on the website; and the board are available to answer questions and offer support.

Assistant Coach

We always need assistant coaches. This position is a great place to start if you have a heart to coach but have never done it before. You can learn a lot from the Head Coach, help keep the practices moving along, and help with substitutions during the games.

Team Parent

This one is all about delegation and communication. Help to make sure all the parents on your team are involved, especially with making sure there is coverage for paper scorekeeper and electronic scorekeeper at the games. It will take some communication during the week with other parents (usually via email). Also, help the coaches keep track of basketballs at practice, make sure the team party is planned, and make sure the team pictures are planned; all of which can be delegated. If you don’t sign up for Team Parent then please make the Team Parent’s job easy by volunteering in other ways and allowing them to delegate other jobs to you. There will be more details and helpful advice for Team Parents at the Kickoff Meeting.

Paper Scorekeeper

Every game needs a Paper Scorekeeper for each team. That means each team needs to cover the Paper Scorekeeper role a total of six times for the season. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. There will be Game Coordinators, the Electronic Scorekeeper, and other parents around to help out if it’s your first time, if you missed a basket, if you missed a team foul, or whatever; help is nearby.

Electronic Scorekeeper

Every game needs one Electronic Scorekeeper. It is the responsibility of the home team, which, for a 6-game schedule, would be 3 slots that need to be filled. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. There will be Game Coordinators, Paper Scorekeepers, and other parents around to help out if it’s your first time, if you missed a basket, if you missed a team foul, or whatever; help is nearby.

Referee

We are always in need of individuals to referee the 7-9 and 10-13 year old teams.

Game Coordinator

Game Coordinators act as the go-between for the scorekeepers, referees, and coaches. They ensure good communication at the scoring table, and between the scoring table and the referees, providing assistance especially to the scorekeepers and making sure the games are starting on time.
